The father of a bicyclist killed by a hit-and-run driver in Tamarac last week is pleading with the driver and any witnesses to come forward.

Elijah Thompson, 22, of 4701 Northwest 44th Ct. in Tamarac, was riding his bicycle across West Commercial Boulevard at Northwest 47th Terrace on Oct. 8, within the designated crosswalk, when a car struck him at 10:38 p.m., according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit.

Thompson was thrown off his bicycle and into the roadway. The driver of the car then fled the area, heading east on West Commercial Boulevard, authorities said.

Tamarac Fire Rescue responded to the scene and pronounced Thompson dead.

Based on evidence recovered at the crash site, the car involved is believed to be a dark 2018 to 2020 Infinity Q50, authorities said. The vehicle will likely have front-end damage, including to the grill, headlight, and possibly the windshield, according to BSO.

Elijah’s father, Timothy Thompson, said Elijah was his only child.

He said he raised him as a single parent to be “respectful, humble, gentle. Truly a good person.”

“He did not have to go like this,” Thompson said at BSO headquarters Friday. “He was too good of a person. Please, whoever you are, whoever may have been around who witnessed this senseless hit-and-run, please come forward. Say something…I need your help.”

“My only child was taken from me.”

Detectives want to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash or its aftermath.

Anyone with information on the driver or the car involved is asked to call BSO Traffic Homicide Det. Sherry Portoro at 954-321-4843, or submit a tip through the SaferWatch App.

Those who wish to remain anonymous can submit a tip to Broward Crime Stoppers by phone at 954-493-TIPS (8477), online at browardcrimestoppers.org, or by dialing **TIPS (8477) from any cellphone in the United States.
