J.P. Taravella baseball has been red-hot of late and has won five straight after their 8-5 win on Friday.

The Trojans beat Miller School of Albemarle (Virginia), coached by former MLB star pitcher Billy Wagner.

“The team just keeps finding ways,” said Head Coach Joe Giummule. “Different hero every night and lots of young guys stepping up, including tonight where five sophomores played a major role in the victory.”

Despite falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, Jacob Tannenbaum got JPT on the board with a sacrifice fly. Both teams answered with two runs in as third Johnny Lopez and Anthony Giglio knocked in runs.

The Trojans were finally able to even the score at five in the fifth after Nate Carroll singled home a run and Giglio scored on a wild pitch. JC Martinez gave JPT the lead with a double in the sixth, and the Trojans added two more on a hit from Lopez.

Anthony Tizol earned the win in relief after coming in for Enzo Gurgel. Tizol tossed four scoreless innings before Mikael Ghann picked up the save.

“We didn’t expect them to contribute this much early on,” Giummule said. “It usually takes a while, but with some injuries, they have been given some opportunities, and they have exceeded all expectations so far and are a major reason we are seven and one.”

JPT’s only loss came against the back-to-back State Champions in Marjory Stoneman Douglas in the final of the BCAA Championship. They are set to play two games next week, starting with Pompano Beach on Tuesday, March 14, before hosting another two-time State Champions in North Broward Prep at home on Thursday, March 16.
