Coming off their first loss against Coral Springs High School earlier this month, the J.P. Taravella boys basketball team has been red-hot heading into the holiday break.
On December 11, the Trojans won against Coconut Creek High School 86-55. James Ganley scored 25 points, while Andres Demoya added 24.
They continued their winning streak with an 82-35 triumph against Coral Springs Charter, with Camden Fearon scoring 32 points and Jordan Arriaga contributing 15 points.
The team then secured their seventh victory with a hard-fought 51-47 win over Piper, with Demoya being the top scorer. However, they suffered a 78-70 loss against Plantation High School in their next game.
“I feel very encouraged because of the room for growth we have,” head coach Eric Kapel said. “We haven’t played our best basketball yet.
JPT will play in the Lake Worth Christian Shootout on December 27, with their first game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. against Seacrest Country Club. The Trojans went 3-0 last year in this tournament, beating St. John Paul II Academy, Olympic Heights, and Leonard High School.
The girls basketball team recorded a dominant 35-16 victory over Pompano Beach High School on December 8 to move to 3-1 but fell in their next game against Coconut Creek High School three days later. The Trojans previously beat Miramar and Hallandale High School and then got their fourth win against Plantation High School on Monday, 47-31.
The Trojans will return to the court on January 8 against Fort Lauderdale High School. The Flying L’s began season 3-0 with wins against Miramar, Coral Glades, and Chaminade Madonna High School but have lost their last four games after a 50-44 victory in their only meeting last year.
The boys soccer team only played two games through the first quarter of the season, going 0-1-1, but recorded their first win on December 12 following a 3-2 win over Cardinal Gibbons High School. They then played a 1-1 draw against Coral Springs Charter on December 14.
JPT will have games against Somerset Prep, Pompano Beach, and Western High School before taking on McArthur High School on January 11 at 4 p.m. The Mustangs already have five wins this year after going 15-4-2 and beating the Trojans 3-2 in their only meeting last season.
The girls soccer team had their first win in their second game this season against Somerset Prep after scoring seven goals, but they have gone winless in their other six games, scoring only once. They are coming off losses in the last two games against Cardinal Gibbons and Fort Lauderdale High School while being outscored 17-0.
Next, JPT will play Western before a matchup with Coral Springs High School on January 9 at 5 p.m. The Lady Colts are 6-2 this year, with their only losses coming against Coral Glades and Coral Springs Charter. JPT, though, knocked them out of the postseason last year after a 2-1 victory.
