After a brief manhunt, law enforcement successfully apprehended a Tamarac resident suspected of committing a series of thefts involving Amazon packages left on doorsteps.
On September 4, deputies from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a series of Amazon package doorstep package thefts in a community located near the 4700 block of Monterey Drive, ultimately leading to the capture and arrest of the man known to law enforcement and pinned as the prime suspect in the case, later identified as Bethony Dorestil, 32, of Tamarac.
According to multiple arrest and incident reports, the reports of package thefts began pouring in just after 9:00 a.m., beginning when BSO received a call regarding a theft incident at an undisclosed address in Tamarac in which the caller described the suspect as a black male, approximately 5’11” in height, with a slim build, short black afro hair, and dressed in a long gray sweater, black gym shorts, and black shoes.
According to the caller, the suspect, later identified as Dorestil, was seen carrying a large black bag and walking throughout the community.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers spotted Dorestil carrying the sizeable black duffle bag described. As officers attempted to apprehend him, he resisted arrest by pushing one of them away as they tried to handcuff him and fleeing the scene, running eastbound between residential homes.
During the pursuit, one deputy suffered a cut to their right-hand middle finger, resulting in an eventual additional battery on a law enforcement officer charge against Dorestil.
An investigation revealed Dorestil’s involvement in previous theft cases and prior dealings with him, allowing deputies to identify Dorestil through video footage captured positively. Key to law enforcement’s ability to locate Dorestil was the discovery that his mother’s residence was in the vicinity.
Upon a knock-and-talk at his mother’s home near the 4700 block of Northwest 44th Court, Dorestil was found hiding inside a parked car in the driveway. He was taken into custody and transported to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Tamarac District office for questioning, where he admitted to stealing packages.
Of his many thefts, it was revealed during questioning and captured on surveillance video that Dorestil had stolen an Amazon package containing K-cup coffee valued at approximately $30. Dorestil confessed to the theft, citing frustration from being late for work.
Dorestil was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He faces multiple burglary and battery charges on a law enforcement officer, with an ongoing investigation into other incidents.
