A Kings Point resident and her dog became stuck on their elevator at their condo during Monday’s thunderstorms.
After taking her dog Curly outside, Ashmont resident Judy Ewing was riding up the elevator when it stalled.
Judy, who said she was claustrophobic, remained there for nine minutes. During this time, she pushed the emergency phone button, not knowing what to expect. But, to her relief, it connected her to 911.
She informed the dispatcher of her plight, and when she was asked if she was ok, she replied, “No, I’m freaking out.”
The Tamarac Fire Department was dispatched, and after they pried open part of the door, Judy and Curly were free.
Residents of the Ashmont community were told it was an elevator power problem, and several hours later, there was a blackout in the entire three-story C building.
FPL dispatched three trucks, and about 12 crewmembers worked for several hours to correct the building’s power system.
A congenial gathering of neighbors came outside with flashlights and commented that this was a good opportunity for a dry run for the upcoming hurricane season.
While power has been restored, the elevator continues to be out of order at this time.
