A 28-year-old man was arrested for trying to break into a marked Broward Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle in Tamarac—as well as for carrying a Taser and methamphetamine—then battering a deputy as he tried to escape his holding cell, court records show.
The accused burglar, from Hialeah, tried to enter the locked BSO vehicle in the 10000 block of W. McNab Rd. on Dec. 12, according to BSO. When deputies tracked the suspect down in front of a Tamarac Krispy Kreme, a pat-down revealed a Taser X26 in his pocket as well as less than a gram of methamphetamine, plus four syringes containing an unknown substance, according to an arrest affidavit.
Deputies took the man to BSO’s Tamarac District Office on North Pine Island Road. There, he managed to slip a hand out of his handcuffs and lunge at deputies, trying to escape his holding cell, the affidavit states.
Two deputies suffered cuts to their arms while preventing his escape, according to BSO.
The man is charged with burglary, resisting an officer, battery on an officer, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and carrying an electric weapon, court records show.
A judge ordered him to be screened for mental health issues and provided with recommended medications, the records show.
Tamarac Talk is withholding the man’s name because he appears to be mentally ill.
He was being held without bond Monday at the Broward Main Jail.
