Man Killed, BSO Deputy Wounded During North Lauderdale Shootout

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies fatally shot a man in North Lauderdale Saturday morning after he opened fire on them with his own gun, leaving one deputy with a bullet graze wound on his head, authorities said.

The gunfire exchange happened shortly before 8 a.m. after deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 1700 block of South State Road 7, according to BSO.

When deputies made contact with the adult man, who BSO did not identify, he “produced a firearm and fired at deputies, grazing one of the deputies in the head,” the agency said in a press release Saturday morning.

“Deputies returned fire, striking the male subject,” the release states. “The subject was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

The deputy who was struck was also rushed to an area hospital and is expected to recover, according to BSO.

BSO’s Homicide Unit detectives, Crime Scene Unit investigators, and Internal Affairs investigators responded to the scene.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, deputies said.

BSO was urging motorists on Saturday morning to avoid the area of South State Road 7 between Southwest 17th Street and Bailey Road.
