A man is accused of pulling a handgun on HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital staff after blaming employees for his mother’s death.
According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit, Mark Anthony Bernard, 29, of Sunrise, was arrested on July 20 and charged with aggravated assault on a firefighter, EMT, or other specified officer, along with two counts of battery.Â
The alleged incident unfolded at Woodmont Hospital, located at 7201 University Drive, where deputies were dispatched after receiving reports of a person armed with a weapon.Â
Investigators said Bernard had already fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. Officers later located him at his residence in Sunrise, where he was taken into custody without incident.Â
A handgun was reportedly visible inside his vehicle, along with an AR-15-style rifle.
The investigation determined Bernard’s mother had been hospitalized for several weeks and was not expected to survive. Earlier that day, hospital staff informed Bernard that his mother’s condition was rapidly deteriorating.Â
Detectives said he signed a Do Not Resuscitate waiver before leaving the hospital. Soon after, staff notified him that his mother had died.
According to investigators, Bernard returned to the hospital, checked in with security, obtained a visitor’s badge, and went to the second-floor ICU. There, deputies say he confronted a hospital employee, accused the worker of killing his mother, and punched the employee in the face multiple times.Â
As other employees responded to the disturbance, Bernard allegedly struck a second victim before fleeing down the hallway.
The affidavit states Bernard then removed a handgun from his pocket while running through the hospital. After punching the second employee several times, investigators say he pointed the firearm at the victim and threatened to kill them before fleeing the building.Â
Hospital surveillance footage allegedly captured Bernard holding the handgun during at least one of the confrontations and while running through the hallway, according to investigators.
Bernard was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $60,000 bond.Â
