According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, a 21-year-old man who jumped a $50,000 bond in a Montana sex assault case was arrested Sunday and charged with robbing a Tamarac Publix after kicking and spitting on the store manager.

Jarod Joseph, of Fort Lauderdale, is charged with robbery, carrying a weapon, and resisting an officer, Broward court records show. According to the records, the state of Montana only extradites from neighboring states, meaning Joseph currently cannot be sent back through the legal extradition process to face pending sex assault charges.

In the Tamarac case, deputies responded to a call about a strongarm robbery at the Publix at 4121 W. Commercial Blvd on Aug. 15. The store manager told deputies a man who had previously shoplifted returned to the store, took $20.77 worth of food items off the sales floor, then spit on him and kicked him in his thigh after a verbal exchange according to an arrest affidavit.

The incident was caught on store surveillance video, according to BSO.

One week later, the manager spotted the same man—later identified as Josephnear the store entrance, court records show. Deputies arrived and arrested Joseph, who had a knife in his right front pocket and refused to cooperate, according to BSO.

According to BSO records, Joseph has two active warrants from Montana for sexual assault and jumping a $50,000 bond.

In the Montana case, Joseph entered a plea of not guilty on June 10, 2020, to two counts of felony sexual assault, records show. The alleged incidents, which authorities said involved minors under 10 years old, happened between July 2019 and March 2020, records show.

In February 2021, a warrant for Joseph’s arrest was issued by Montana authorities after he failed to appear at a plea hearing in the case, records show.

Joseph is being held on a $25,000 bond Tuesday at Broward’s Paul Rein Detention Facility, records show.
