Dear Neighbors,
Welcome to May! There are so many things to do and enjoy around town before the start of summer, with plenty of fun for residents of all ages!
Our City also has two wonderful recent achievements to celebrate. Last month, Tamarac Fire Rescue was awarded its second consecutive Accreditation through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI)! Congratulations to all on this well-deserved recognition of the skill, hard work, and dedication of our amazing team!! Also, the City of Tamarac was recently officially designated as a “HAAPE Autism Inclusive City” by Helping Adults with Autism Perform & Excel (HAAPE). I’m so proud of everything our City is doing to ensure we provide an inclusive, welcoming environment for residents of all abilities, including those on the Autism spectrum.
This month, the City is holding its yearly District meetings – the perfect chance for you to hear from and ask questions of the City team! While the meetings are set by District, if you can’t make it to your District meeting, please join us at whichever one you can attend. The schedule is as follows:

The final concert in our Groove on the Grass series will be on Friday, May 2nd, featuring Women of Country, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Sports Complex, 9901 NW 77th Street. Chairs, blankets, and coolers are allowed at this event, but please note that pets are not permitted.
Do you have any unneeded electronics, or hazardous household waste such as pesticides or other chemicals to dispose of safely? The City of Tamarac is holding our next semi-annual community Hazardous Household Waste recycling event on Saturday, May 3rd from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Public Services building, 6011 Nob Hill Road (please use the East entry gate). Just store your items in your trunk, stay in your vehicle and enjoy the AC while the event staff will safely retire and recycle your items! I hope you can join me on Sunday, May 4th, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Woodmont Country Club for a Spring and Summer Fashion Show to benefit the American Business Women’s Association! Looking for a low-impact way to keep moving and enjoy a cool evening breeze at the same time? Come out and engage with other active folks in and around the community in our new free walking club! The group meets the first Wednesday of each month, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Energy Fitness Station at Mainlands Park, 4500 Monterey Drive. Next month’s meet-up will be Wednesday, May 7th. No pre-registration required! Just wear your walking gear and bring water and a towel.

Bring the kids for some family-friendly big-screen action at our final Movie in the Park for this season, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles Mutant Mayhem” on Friday, May 9th at the Tamarac Park, 7501 N. University Drive. Bring your favorite snacks, lawn chairs, and blankets. The movie starts at 8:00 p.m., but don’t miss the kids’ activities that start at 6:30 p.m. with inflatables, face-painting, food trucks, and a DJ.
Do you have a teenager in your life? Then you know that this time with them is special. While it is always rewarding, sometimes it can be challenging, especially when it comes to communicating and connecting with them. Please join us at a free “Teen Talk – Bridging the Divide: Encouraging Open Conversations Between Teens & Adults,” on Saturday, May 10th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center, 8601 W. Commercial Boulevard. This engaging, moderated discussion with audience participation addresses differences in generational points of view, cultural differences affecting communication, the lack of emotional connection, and teen struggles with authority, and features teen and adult breakout sessions. I hope to see you at the City’s fourth annual Honor the Stripe event recognizing the Tamarac District of the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Tamarac Fire Rescue for their selfless service and unwavering commitment to our city’s residents, businesses, and visitors! What better event to hold as the “first ever” at our new Tamarac Village Amphitheater, 9141 W. Commercial Boulevard, than this! Festivities will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 15th.
Ready for some “Spring cleaning”? Then it is time to prepare for BSO’s Operation Medicine Cabinet and Shred-a-thon on Saturday, May 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Kings Point Club House, 7620 Nob Hill Road. Bring your unused, unwanted or expired prescription medications (no needles or sharps) and receive a $5 gift card while supplies last! And to keep yourself safe from identity theft, you may bring up two (2) boxes of sensitive documents to have safely shredded per vehicle. Boxes can be no larger than 16″L x 12″W x 12″H.
Also on May 17th, take the opportunity to learn – or be reminded – about water safety before the summer swimming season gets fully underway, at the Pirate Plunge and Safety Sail! This free event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Caporella Aquatic Center, 9300 NW 58th Street. Join us for a day of fun, learning, and, most importantly, ensuring the safety of our community in and around water. The event will feature hands-on life-saving swimming lessons, a drowning prevention rescue mission, and a hands-on educational seminar. One more event on May 17th will be our next free Move with the Mayor Barre Fitness class starting at 10:35 a.m. at Tamarac Park, 7501 N. University Drive. And I hope you can also join me at next month’s session, Power Circuit, at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 14th, also at Tamarac Park. Please take advantage of the opportunity to improve your health and wellness with these free, fun fitness classes!
Please join me Monday, May 26th as we pay tribute to the countless individuals who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedom at the City’s Memorial Day Ceremony, starting at 10:30 a.m. at Tamarac Veterans’ Park, 7825 Southgate Blvd. The program will include a Special guest speaker, light refreshments, and a fantastic vocal performance by The Miamians.

- Our Farm Share drive-thru food distributions continue on Friday, May 2nd at 9:00 at the Tamarac Sports Complex, 9901 NW 77th Street (car line enters on 77 Street), and then again on Friday, May 16th at 9:00 a.m. at Waters Edge Park, 7508 NW 61st Street. Food will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. For more information, or to volunteer, call (954) 597-3620.
- Shop local at the Tamarac Community Farmer’s Market every Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Tamarac’s Veterans Park, 7825 Southgate Blvd.
- Food Truck Fridays with music and games continue on the last Friday of every month between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center.

May is the month of many observances, when we acknowledge and celebrate Military Appreciation, Asian Pacific American Heritage, Jewish American Heritage, Haitian American Heritage, and Mental Health Awareness. Happy Cinco de Mayo, Buddha’s Birthday, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day! On May 26th and every day:
- Honor the Fallen and our Veterans;
- Appreciate the unsung heroes who serve and sacrifice every day without any recognition;
