Florida State Representative Anika Omphroy, whose district includes parts of Tamarac, will host a fibroids awareness forum Thursday at 6:30 p.m., her office announced.
Guest speakers for the in-person and Zoom event include Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls; Congresswoman Lauren Underwood, Co-Founder & Co-Chair of the Black Maternal Health Caucus; and Deputy Secretary for Health Dr. Shamarial Roberson, of the Florida Department of Health.
July is Fibroids Awareness Month, an initiative created to draw attention to uterine fibroids, a condition that creates challenges for millions of women around the world, according to the Fibroid Institute Dallas.
Fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus often appearing during childbearing years, affecting 70 to 80 percent of all women between 35 and 54, according to the institute.
Those numbers are higher among Black women, with 80 percent of Black women developing fibroids by the time they are 50 compared to 70 percent of white women, data show.
The growths can lead to pain, fatigue, infertility, and miscarriages, according to medical experts.
In-person seating for the forum is limited and face masks are required for all in-person attendees.
