Detectives on Thursday arrested a man in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Tamarac.
Authorities identified Demetrius Etienne, 23, of Lauderdale Lakes, as the driver who fled the scene following the deadly Nov. 22 collision that killed Shane Delinks, 51, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Etienne was booked into the Broward Main Jail on charges of leaving the scene of an accident causing death and tampering with evidence.
A judge ordered Etienne held on a $55,000 bond, along with an order for electronic monitoring if he is released, court records show.
The fatal crash happened around 11:56 p.m. on Nov. 22 in the 5000 block of North State Road 7 in Tamarac, investigators said. Surveillance video reviewed by detectives shows Delinks crossing the southbound lanes of North State Road 7 mid-block just north of Commercial Boulevard.
At the same time, a silver Toyota Camry, later identified as being driven by Etienne, was traveling south in the left through lane when the driver’s side of the front bumper struck Delinks in a sideswipe-type collision, according to BSO.
After the initial impact, Delinks fell to the pavement. Investigators said that while he was lying in the road, an unknown black sedan traveled over him and continued southbound without stopping. Authorities have not said whether that sedan’s driver, if identified, will face charges.
Other drivers noticed Delinks lying in the road after being run over and stopped, detectives said.
Video footage taken after the crash shows Etienne pulling into the parking lot of a nearby Shell gas station and stepping out of his Camry, according to BSO. Investigators said Etienne then walked back toward where Delinks was lying and looked on from the sidewalk as good Samaritans attempted to give him aid.
The video next shows Etienne returning to his Camry and driving away from the scene, according to investigators.
Tamarac Fire Rescue rushed Delinks to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition. Days later, he died from his injuries.
With help from BSO’s Real Time Crime Center, traffic homicide detectives found the hit-and-run vehicle involved – the silver Camry – and identified Etienne as the suspect, authorities said.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, according to BSO.
