The death of a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy who worked in Tamarac has affected his entire district.
Deputy Robert Aspuru, 54, was killed in an off-duty traffic accident on May 12 and had worked in the city for the last five years. In 1999 he joined BSO after serving as a Marine.
“Deputy Aspuru was a seasoned veteran with the sheriff’s office,” said Captain Jeffrey Cirminiello. “He loved his job and always had a smile on his face. He will be missed by all of us. We are deeply saddened by his loss. I wish his family and friends healing and peace.”
Tamarac City Manager Michael Cernech shared the news during the city commission meeting on May 13, saying that they had unfortunately found out that Deputy Aspuru was killed in an off-duty motorcycle accident in Boca Raton the prior day.
The single-vehicle crash near 1799 South Federal Highway is still being investigated.
Deputy Daniel Lovallo worked the same shift for years with Deputy Aspuro, as zone partners, and was his close friend outside of work. Like many of his colleagues, his death is a tragedy.
Lovallo said that Aspuru was very generous and passionate about taking care of his mother and that he’ll remember him as always being in a good mood, never letting anything get him down.
“He always gave us a good laugh, and we all trust Rob with our lives. If you wanted someone as your backup, it would be Rob,” said Lovallo. “No one is replaceable, but especially Rob, truly one of a kind.”
Lovallo said he would remember and celebrate all the things that made Aspuru who he was. In addition to his generosity and humor, he was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and spent lots of time in the gym.
While Aspuru’s death has come as a shock to his colleagues, Lovallo said it’s also reminded them how precious and fragile life is, and they know he’s looking down on them now, smiling and offering protection.
“We have cried, laughed, and come together as a shift, as his friends, and as his second family closer than ever before,” said Lovallo.
Deputy Aspuru’s viewing took place on May 19 and he will be honored and buried in a military cemetery on Wednesday, May 20.
Lovallo said that he and the other deputies would one day ride with Aspuru again, on the streets of heaven without sadness or pain and that he will always be loved and missed dearly.
