Broward Sheriff’s Office Tamarac District {BSO}
Tamarac is expanding traffic enforcement around local schools after city commissioners approved an amended agreement with the Broward Sheriff’s Office to review speed-camera violations and issue citations to drivers caught speeding in school zones.
At its Aug. 26 meeting, the Tamarac City Commission approved the first amendment to the city’s law enforcement services agreement with Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony. The amendment adds enforcement services for Tamarac’s school-zone speed-detection system and revises the staffing structure under the agreement.
As part of the change, six community service aide positions will be eliminated and replaced with two sergeant positions. The total BSO contract for the 2026-27 fiscal year is $26,648,754, according to the city.
Tamarac implemented the speed-detection system as part of an effort to improve safety near schools. Although cameras capture potential violations, state law requires an authorized traffic infraction enforcement officer to review the images before a citation can be issued.
Under the amended agreement, BSO will review potential violations recorded by the city’s system and issue citations when appropriate. The agency will use existing personnel to perform those duties.
