A Tamarac man who was previously wanted on an active warrant surrendered to law enforcement. He now faces multiple felony charges for a wrong-way collision on the Turnpike in June that resulted in severe injuries to another driver.
On August 14, Joseph Vito Cangialosi, 28, of Tamarac, turned himself into law enforcement and now faces charges related to the violent high-speed June 10 accident.
According to Broward County Sheriff’s Office records, the collision occurred around 12:05 a.m. on June 10 on the northbound Interstate-75 exit ramp to westbound Miramar Parkway.
Cangialosi allegedly operated a box truck that had been traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Miramar Parkway just before the crash occurred. He then entered the northbound I-75 exit ramp in the wrong direction, leading to a collision with an oncoming vehicle.
Emergency response teams from multiple agencies were called to the scene to assist with the rescue efforts, including multiple fire departments that worked for over an hour and forty-five minutes to extricate the injured driver from his vehicle, which had been badly crushed due to the impact of the collision.
The warrant for Cangialosi’s arrest shows the investigation into whether he was impaired at the time of the crash shows that he exhibited signs of impairment even hours after the crash.
According to the report, he had bloodshot eyes and the smell of alcohol on his breath at the time of his arrest, and subsequent blood tests indicated that his blood alcohol concentration was well above the legal limit.
According to medical records associated with the investigation toxicology samples, Cangialosi had blood alcohol levels that were still elevated five hours after the crash.
Cangialosi was transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he ng held without bond.
