A man is facing charges of first-degree attempted murder for allegedly shooting a woman in the back of the head.
On August 19, the Broward Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a residence near the 9500 block of Northwest 72nd Court in response to reports of a shooting and an injured victim.
According to records, a deputy already in the vicinity of the area addressing a noise complaint heard a single gunshot and rushed to the scene to join deputies on their way.
Upon arrival, deputies immediately encountered a conscious but injured victim with a gunshot wound to the back of her head.
The alleged shooter, identified in the arrest report as Stevie Herbert, 43, of Tamarac, was located at the scene and reportedly immediately confessed to the shooting when approached by law enforcement.
Herbert was detained and, during a search, was found to have a Smith & Wesson .38 Special Revolver. Upon interview, Herbert admitted to firing his weapon at the victim, claiming self-defense, stating he felt threatened.
Furthermore, Herbert reportedly told deputies that his training called for always shooting to kill, not wound, and he had every intention of killing the victim with a shot to the back of her head but only slightly missed the mark.
Herbert told deputies that he holstered his firearm after firing the single round, and law enforcement was on the scene within just a few moments.
According to the report, the victim painted a much different picture of the events that transpired, telling deputies the encounter began as she approached Herbert’s residence to address the loud music coming from his home.
The victim said she attempted to communicate with Herbert but couldn’t due to the noise. After turning to walk away, she heard a gunshot and felt a blow to the back of her head. Turning around, she saw Herbert holding a firearm.
Further investigation by BSO deputies found that the victim had not threatened Herbert and that her intention was simply to address the noise disturbance caused by the loud music.
The report indicated Herbert’s confession to detectives in which he allegedly admitted to intentionally aiming and firing his firearm at the victim’s head with the intent to kill qualifies as premeditation, heightening his charges to first-degree attempted murder.
Herbert was taken into custody and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he is being held without bond.
