The Florida League of Cities has recognized Tamarac Mayor Michelle J. Gomez with a 2026 Home Rule Hero Award for the second consecutive year, citing her advocacy efforts during the 2026 Legislative Session.
The annual award honors local government officials who work to protect “home rule,” the authority of municipalities to address local issues with minimal state interference. According to the League, Gomez was among those who actively engaged with state lawmakers by sharing data, insights, and real-world examples to highlight the importance of local decision-making.
“Local voices matter, and during the 2026 Legislative Session, these leaders made sure those voices were heard,” said Casey Cook, chief of legislative affairs for the Florida League of Cities. “By engaging early, often, and thoughtfully, they helped elevate the municipal perspective and reinforce the importance of local decision-making.”
Gomez said she was honored to receive the recognition again.
“I am humbled to receive this distinguished award by the Florida League of Cities for the second year in a row,” she said in a statement. “It remains a privilege advocating for Tamarac residents and businesses, and working with the League so that Tallahassee hears our voices.”
Gomez has served as Tamarac’s mayor since 2018 and previously represented District 2 as a commissioner from 2010 to 2018, including four terms as vice mayor. She remains active in regional initiatives, serving on more than 20 committees and councils, including leadership roles with Broward County’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee and Planning Council.
In addition to her public service, Gomez is a practicing attorney and community leader who has completed several professional programs, including the FBI Citizens Academy and the Urban Land Institute Leadership Institute. She is also a breast cancer survivor, an experience she has said helped shape her leadership and resilience.
The Florida League of Cities presents the Home Rule Hero Award annually to officials who consistently advocate for municipal priorities during the state legislative process.
