A pet sitter was arrested after claiming a dog’s critical injuries were caused by a freak computer monitor accident
According to a Lauderhill Police Department arrest report, Gongtao Sun, 37, of Lauderhill, was arrested on April 29 following an investigation into the severe injuries suffered by a dog named Chepe.
While at work, the owner monitored the dog through a camera. At one point, the camera fell and was repositioned, but it fell again. Police said communication with Sun became inconsistent, and he later told the owner the dog had “bumped his head.”
During a phone call later that afternoon, the owner asked Sun to take the dog to a veterinarian. Instead, he sent a video showing Chepe unresponsive with visible swelling to the head.
When the owner returned home that evening, the dog was still inside the apartment and injured.
Police said Sun told them he found the dog under a computer monitor and believed the animal had become tangled in the wires, causing the monitor to fall.
According to the report, Sun did not take the dog to receive medical care.
The owner later brought Chepe to a veterinarian, where medical staff documented head trauma, seizures, neck bruising, eye hemorrhaging, and abdominal injuries. Authorities said the injuries did not match the explanation provided and were consistent with repeated blunt force trauma.
Veterinary staff advised that the dog had a low chance of survival and discussed euthanasia. At a later visit, the dog was able to stand but could not fully walk. Police said the animal may suffer long-term neurological effects.
Sun was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail on April 29.
A judge set bond at $20,000, ordered a mental health evaluation, and prohibited Sun from having contact with the dog or its owner or possessing animals.
