Carel Pedre {BSO}
Haitian TV star and Tamarac resident Carel Pedre was transferred to “Alligator Alcatraz” following his arrest Sunday for allegedly battering his live-in girlfriend, after which authorities discovered an issue with his immigration status, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement records show.
Pedre, charged with misdemeanor battery, was flagged with an ICE detainer and turned over to ICE custody after he posted a $1,000 cash bond, according to Broward County court records. He has pleaded not guilty in the domestic violence case.
In a motion seeking to have Pedre’s bond lifted in the case, his Miami-based attorney, Jeremy McLymont, said the popular Haitian media personality and broadcaster had consulted with an immigration attorney.
McLymont said he “learned that if Mr. Pedre were released to ICE with a pending case, there is a very good chance that Mr. Pedre will not be brought back to this [Broward] Court to defend the charges in this case,” court papers state.
Pedre’s release into ICE custody happened a short time later, records show.
It was not immediately clear Friday when or if Pedre would return to court. And online records do not include details about his immigration case.
“Alligator Alcatraz,” officially called the South Florida Detention Facility, is a controversial U.S. immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades opened by authorities in July. Built rapidly amid President Donald Trump’s crackdown on people whose presence in the U.S. violates immigration law, the facility has housed thousands of migrants and been widely criticized for what critics say are inhumane living conditions. Operated by Florida authorities with federal funding, the detention center is a state-run facility for federal prisoners —an arrangement that has drawn multiple legal challenges and accusations of illegal detention.
ICE Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin has called those claims false, stating that, “Alligator Alcatraz does meet federal detention standards … All detainee facilities are clean. Any allegations of inhumane conditions are false.”
Pedre, a native of Haiti, is among the most-watched media personalities in the island nation and also commands a massive audience on social media.
Deputies were dispatched to the apartment Pedre shares with his girlfriend at 9097 NW 57th Street in Tamarac around 1 a.m. Sunday, after a neighbor reported hearing a female screaming and said the victim was being choked by a man – later identified as Pedre – and asking for help, an arrest report states.
According to the arrest report, Pedre was arrested after Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies determined he had thrown his girlfriend to the ground.
Pedre was taken into custody, handcuffed, searched, and taken to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Tamarac District office before being booked into the BSO Main Jail, according to the report. He was transported to Alligator Alcatraz once he posted bond, records show.
