A caregiver was apprehended and faces petty theft and exploiting an older person charges after being captured on camera stealing money.
On September 16, a home caregiver, Astride Lucius, 36, of Sunrise, was arrested after an older client she was caring for in the Kings Point community in Tamarac reported a theft to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the arrest report, Lucius was captured by the victim on surveillance video stealing $40 from her purse.
Upon review of the footage, Lucius was seen sitting at the dining room table, opening the victim’s purse, removing four $10 bills, and discreetly placing the money into her pocket.
After discovering the missing money, the victim checked her purse and confirmed that four $10 bills were missing. The victim stated that she had never permitted Lucius to access her purse, let alone take money from it.
On September 16, deputies took Astride Lucius into custody at the victim’s residence. During a search incident to arrest, law enforcement officers discovered four $10 bills inside Lucius’ purse.
After being read her Miranda Rights, Lucius admitted to taking the money, claiming she needed the money to fill her gas tank. She insisted that the money in her purse did not belong to the victim and denied taking any additional money or jewelry.
After her admission, Lucius was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. She was later released after posting a $750 bond.
