Tamarac Synagogue’s Yom HaShoah Commemoration Highlights Story of Jewish Partisan Who Fought Nazis 1

Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek (TBTST) in Tamarac will host a moving Yom HaShoah Community Commemoration on Wednesday, April 23, at 7 p.m., featuring a personal account of Holocaust survival and resistance.

Author Joe Sabrin will share the extraordinary story of his father, Holocaust survivor and Jewish partisan Abrashe Szabrinski, whose experiences are chronicled in Sabrin’s book, We Dared to Live. A leader among the partisans who fought the Nazis in the forests of Lithuania, Abrashe’s story is one of remarkable courage and resilience.

The younger Sabrin will discuss how his father, like many Holocaust survivors, was reluctant to share the full scope of his wartime experiences. It wasn’t until after Abrashe’s passing that Joe discovered the extent of his father’s role in the resistance — a legacy captured through the memoir Abrashe typed in Yiddish on a typewriter gifted by his son.

“This is more than a history lesson,” said a representative of the synagogue. “It’s a deeply personal journey that reminds us of the strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable darkness.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase signed copies of We Dared to Live following the event.

The commemoration will be held at Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek, located at 5700 NW 94th Avenue in Tamarac. Guests should enter through the rear parking lot, accessible from NW 58th Street.
