A Tamarac woman was charged with her brother’s 2014 murder Wednesday after a tip led Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives to his buried remains, deputies said.
Detectives arrested Darlene Ann Shoff-Brock, 62, at her home on Northwest 66th Terrace for allegedly killing Donald Marks Shoff seven years earlier. Shoff, 53, was shot in the back of his head and buried at a residence in Dania Beach, according to BSO.
The motive for the killing remained under investigation Thursday, but witnesses said Shoff-Brock and her brother often argued about money, and Shoff had accused his sister of stealing money from him, detectives said.
“Based on witness statements, evidence from the skeletal remains, and DNA results, homicide investigators said they believe Shoff-Bock shot and killed her brother sometime in May 2014,” deputies said in a press release. “They believe she shot the victim at a home in Hollywood and buried his body at the second location where the remains were recovered.”
Since the investigation is ongoing, homicide detectives are not releasing the addresses of the homes where they believe Shoff was shot or where his remains were recovered, deputies said.
Detectives caught the trail of the killer in early June 2021, when BSO homicide Detective John Curcio got a tip from a retired law enforcement officer “who said he was told that there was a body of a murdered male, Donald Marks Shoff, buried in the backyard of a home in Dania Beach,” deputies said.
On June 29, Curcio contacted Shoff-Brock to set up an in-person interview to talk about her brother. She told Curcio that “her brother had been out of the country for the last couple of years.”
The next morning, Shoff-Brock‘s attorney contacted Curcio to cancel the interview, according to BSO.
On July 9, detectives and crime scene technicians found human remains at a residence in Dania Beach in the exact location where the retired law enforcement officer was told Shoff was buried, deputies said.
On July 19, the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office, with the help of an anthropologist, determined the victim had been shot in the back of the head.
The Pinellas County Forensic Lab confirmed on Aug. 4 that the remains of the murder victim were consistent with being the biological child of Shoff-Bock’s mother, deputies said.
Shoff-Bock is being held at the Broward Main Jail without bond and faces one count of first-degree murder.
