Voter’s Guide For U.S. House, District 20 Primary Election

As part of our coverage of the race to replace the late U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, Tamarac Talk is providing the following voter’s guide for the upcoming U.S. District 20 Special Primary Election.

The open congressional seat covers Tamarac, Lauderhill, Lauderdale Lakes, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Belle Glade.

The Primary Election has been scheduled for Nov. 2, 2021, and the General Election for Jan. 11, 2022. Early primary voting will be held Oct. 23 through Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the following Broward polling places:

-Tamarac Branch Library, 8701 W. Commercial Boulevard, Tamarac.

-African-American Research Library, 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale.

-Miramar Branch Library, 2050 Civic Center Place, Miramar.

-Lauderhill Mall, 1519 NW 40th Avenue, Lauderhill.

-South Regional Library, 7300 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines.

-E. Pat Larkins Community Center, 520 Martin Luther King Boulevard, Pompano Beach.

Local voters can also get their COVID-19 vaccine at the above sites as part of the Broward County Supervisor of Elections “Vote & Vax” program. 

To vote, citizens must provide a Florida driver’s license or another form of government photo identification with their signature.

In the primary election, voters can only vote for a candidate who shares their registered political affiliation. For example, a voter registered as a Democrat can only vote for a Democratic candidate.

Here is the list of candidates on the primary ballot, a sample of which has been posted on the Broward County Supervisor of Elections site.

Democrats

Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick: Lawyer and Chief Executive Officer of Trinity Health Care Services.

Elvin Dowling: CEO of Global Image Consulting, former Chief of Staff at the National Urban League, and a former aide on Hastings’ staff.

Bobby DuBose: Minority leader in the Florida House of Representatives. First elected to the House in 2014, DuBose represents parts of Broward County.

Omari Hardy: Educator, former City Commissioner in Lake Worth, and a Florida State Representative.

Dale Holness: Broward County Commissioner, former Mayor of Broward County, and former City Commissioner in Lauderhill.

Phil Jackson: U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, retired. Former college vice president and dean. President and CEO, P.R. Jackson and Associates.

Emmanuel Morel: Entrepreneur, former Department of Labor investigator, and former president of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Palm Beach County.

Barbara Sharief: Broward County Commissioner, former Broward County Mayor, and Miramar City Commissioner. Founder and CEO of South Florida Pediatric Homecare, Inc.

Imran Siddiqui: Doctor practicing internal medicine.

Priscilla Taylor: Consultant, former Florida State Representative, and former Palm Beach County commissioner and mayor.

Perry Thurston: Florida State Senator and former public defender.

Republicans

Jason Mariner: Business owner and former opioid addict who co-founded a drug and alcohol detox center.

Greg Musselwhite: Welder and certified welding inspector. He ran against Hastings in the 2020 general election and was defeated.
