Tamarac Residents: The Lonely Kids in the Media World

By: Sharon Aron Baron

Tamarac is like the one kid who never gets invited to the birthday party. At least in South Florida’s crowded media world; Tamarac gets ignored because no company wants to waste their time peddling their magazines to our demographics.

For residents in Coral Springs, Parkland and even Coconut Creek, they receive free magazines such as: Spectator, Our Town News, Parkland/Coral Springs Life and The Parklander, many which are delivered to their homes.

Not so, in Tamarac where the only free magazines mailed to our residents are The Flyer and the Forum. The Flyer is a weekly classified magazine used to buy and sell merchandise, and The Forum is a weekly newspaper, from the owners of the Sun Sentinel, that publishes light articles, editorials, a police blotter and events.

Except for these two, there are no magazines delivered to residents in Tamarac as we are the persona non grata in the media world.

You may be able to pick up Our Town News, which has a few magazines around City Hall and the Recreation center, but so far they haven’t invested their money mailing them to your homes like they have to all residents of Coral Springs and Parkland.

The Parklander Magazine says they serve Tamarac yet none of our residents receive it.

The Parklander Magazine says they serve Tamarac yet none of our residents receive it.

According to Life Publications, publisher of Parkland/ Coral Springs Life Magazine, residents in Parkland, Heron Bay, Eagle Trace, Maplewood Isle, Mariner’s Cove, Whispering Woods, The Isles and over 33 of the most affluent communities in Coral Springs get their magazine delivered to their homes.

The Parklander has the audacity to say that they serve Tamarac in their banner on page four along with several other cities, however, you’ll only get the Parklander if you live in Parkland and Boca Raton.

So how’s that serving Tamarac?

Tamarac has a population of 60,000 residents who are consumers as well. We spend money, buy cars, visit attorneys and doctors and have an untapped market of residents in many of our communities that will eat at your restaurant, shop at your businesses and buy your products.

If we only knew about them.

Don’t feel so bad. Taxpayers pay for Coconut Creek Life which the publisher receives a yearly stipend from the city to publish and deliver – about $80,000 a year. Coral Springs/Parkland Life is supported by ad dollars which essentially is determined by market share. Margate, like Tamarac, have high levels of residents living at or below the poverty level which oftentimes determines a publisher’s interest (market share/disposable income) in a City. As far as Our Town News – It’s a free paper that proclaims to talk about all the positive things going on, which largely amounts to paid advertorials and exposure for non-profits. They, like many others, work largely off press releases – not indepth writing or reporting.
You’ve got something going on here Sharon and educated people are phasing out print for mobile handheld access to news, which the above magazines are not news, but rather more lifestyle fluff that most can find anywhere – and just about any coupon or offer you’ll find in these mags can be found online. “Our Town News?” Whose town? Besides, we’re all Cities….right? LOL!
It’s not easy selling ads, but it can be done in the online world. Keep on truckin’

I’ve lived in Tamarac for 30 years and have never had the Forum delivered to me. Who’s getting it???

It would be nice to get a comprehensive publication, even if it’s advertiser and city supported. Does anyone know how much the Tam a Gram costs the city to produce and mail out? It’s not really filled with any news. Most of it is just pictures of our Commissioners at holiday events, or boasting about how great Tamarac is, when it’s actually a city in turmoil with some of those very politicians getting caught breaking laws due to their own greed. I hate not being proud of my city, but residents are ignored, our elected officials and city manager are very short sighted, and all the improvements in the surrounding cities just make us look worse.
