Two Tamarac residents aim to bring tails wagging and purrs to local shelters while inspiring their peers to make a difference.
Aiykiera Brown and Sara Bendana, both 18 and seniors at Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy, co-founded the Furever Friends committee as part of a National Honor Society (NHS) community service project.
The pair is making a difference by combining their love for animals by supporting local animal shelters through hands-on care, awareness campaigns, and fundraising.
The Furever Friends committee aims to address shelter needs and promote animal adoption, and Aiykiera and Sara regularly volunteer at United for Animals Rescue in Margate.

“We assist in grooming and feeding the cats, helping ensure they receive proper care and attention,” said Aikiera.
Furever Friends also sells handmade bracelets to fund their efforts, with all proceeds benefiting local shelters.
Beyond fundraising, the duo has expanded their outreach by partnering with Coral Square Mall to participate in holiday events, using these gatherings to raise awareness.
On November 14, they participated in the mall’s Breakfast with Santa event. On December 14, Furever Friends will collaborate with the City of Tamarac for a fundraising event at Gary B. Jones Dog Park.
Community connection is another crucial aspect of their mission. Every Sunday at 9:30 a.m., Aiykiera and Sara can be found at the Starbucks at 6700 W Atlantic Blvd in Margate, where they engage with residents and share their mission.
On November 24, they will host a special collection event outside Starbucks to further support animal shelters.
The Furever Friends committee is backed by their NHS sponsor, teacher Kelley Fisher, and receives additional support from Wendy Moskowitz, a teacher who frequently assists with their projects.
According to Aiykiera, their club activities are an extension of the leadership, advocacy, and awareness they’ve honed during their high school careers.
Looking ahead, Aiykiera and Sara have big plans. “We both want to apply advocacy, awareness, and leadership we have learned about some of furry best friends and apply them to our future,” said Aiykiera.
Sara intends to study computer science at the University of Florida and aims for a career as a software engineer. Aiykiera plans to double major in public health and minor in business at Florida State University and aspires to join the medical field.
