By Agrippina Fadel

All over the country, Turkey Trots are taking place on the morning of Thanksgiving, allowing participants to run or even walk a few miles with friends, neighbors, and other community members.

Tamarac’s 41st Turkey Trot takes place Thanksgiving morning, on Thursday, November 24, at 7:30 a.m. Registration is $30 through November 15 and $35 from November 16 to 23.

On November 23, registration closes at noon or once the race sells out. There are currently over 1,900 spots still available. Runners without registration will not be able to join on race day.

The 5K (3.1 miles) course at this year’s Tamarac Turkey Trot is USATF certified. The route is flat and fast, with many corners through the Woodmont area of Tamarac.

The race starts at 77th St. on Pine Island Road, follows east on 75th, north on 80th, loops back to Pine Island Road, then south to the finish line at the City Hall.

All participants can pick up their packets on November 21-23, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center or starting at 6.30 a.m. on the race day at Tamarac City Hall.

Age divisions are nine and under, 10 – 12, 13-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75+, for male and female runners.

Trophies are awarded to first overall, three finishers based on gun time, and winners in each age group are awarded first, second, and third place. These will be presented at Tamarac City Hall after the race.

The first 1,500 registered runners will receive commemorative t-shirts, and all finishers wearing a race bib will receive a medal.

The city will set up water stations at the first and second mile markers and provide a variety of food and refreshments for all participants following the race.

Turkey Trot donations benefit the Parks and Recreation Foundation of Tamarac and will be used to provide funding for youth program grants, scholarships, park equipment, and recreation events. Runners can make additional donations during the online registration.
