Four Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies Saturday opened fire on a man who had pointed a gun at his estranged wife, killing the suspect after a police chase, authorities said.
According to BSO, an armed Robert Drangel, 64, of Margate, showed up at a home in the 4600 block of Granville Drive in Tamarac shortly before 1:50 p.m., pointed a gun at his spouse and another female, and fled the scene in one of the victim’s vehicles.
A 911 call about the alleged domestic aggravated assault set authorities on the trail of Drangel, who detectives said was wearing a court-ordered ankle monitor due to a September arrest for aggravated stalking.
A domestic violence injunction against Drangel had been issued by a judge – along with the order he wears an ankle monitor – following his September jailing.
On Saturday, deputies issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for Drangel and the stolen vehicle.
Around 2:15 p.m., authorities said they spotted the vehicle with Drangel inside near Hollywood Boulevard and I-95.
A pursuit by multiple law enforcement agencies continued until a BSO deputy executed a PIT (precision immobilization technique) maneuver on the vehicle near 200 Southwest 21st Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, bringing the car to a halt, authorities said.
Perceiving a threat from Drangel inside the vehicle, four BSO deputies fired their guns at him, according to the agency.
Paramedics from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to the shooting scene and pronounced Drangel dead.
Deputies recovered a gun at the scene, according to BSO.
The agency did not say how many times Drangel was shot.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the fatal shooting, while BSO detectives are investigating the original incident that happened in Tamarac, authorities said.
Per BSO policy, the four deputies who fired their guns were placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation.
Additional information about the fatal shooting was not made public Sunday.
