A new Tamarac scholarship program is awarding up to $2,500 each to select students to help fund their education at a college, university, or trade school.
Tamarac Scholars will provide $112,500 in scholarships annually to students across the City, $22,500 annually to CareerSource Broward to guarantee five additional internships to Tamarac students ages 16 through 18, and $3,750 annually each to the city’s three public schools to fund programs of their choice.
Funding for the scholarship program comes from a $150,000 annual donation from Waste Management, which amounts to over $1 million over seven years, according to Commissioner Morey Wright, who spearheaded the program’s creation.
Applications for the program will open at 9 a.m. on April 1, 2025.
Scholarships are available for Tamarac residents attending a 2-year or 4-year college or university as well as trade schools.
Residency verification and an acceptance letter from the school or program must be submitted with applications, program organizers said.
Residents will also need to provide their name address, email, and city district number in order to apply. To find your district, get additional information, and apply for scholarship funds, visit the program’s web page here.
Only online applications will be accepted.
“Tamarac Scholars is a comprehensive student program that will provide scholarships, internships to Tamarac Students, and funding to local Tamarac public schools,” said Wright.
Wright said a teacher from Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy reached out to him previously asking for $500 to help the school’s track team compete in the county championship. Many residents also asked Wright about summer jobs for their teenagers and ways to help cover college costs. Funding shortfalls have led to the rejection of about 40 Tamarac kids annually at CareerSource Broward, Wright said.
“In trying to find a solution to all the issues I heard, I learned about [an] innovative program called Birmingham Promise and proposed Tamarac Scholars for the city to create a similar program [with money donated by Waste Management] to solve all those issues our residents had encountered,” Wright said.
Representatives from Tamarac schools and CareerSource Broward will attend Tamarac’s March 26 commission meeting to receive checks from the Tamarac Scholars program, officials said.
