The City of Tamarac has begun construction on the new Eastside Community Center, following a demolition and groundbreaking ceremony held April 16 at the site of the former Shaker Village clubhouse.
The event marked the official start of the long-planned project, which includes removing four freestanding walls left behind when Hurricane Irma destroyed the original structure nearly a decade ago. The deteriorating walls, visible from Commercial Boulevard, had become a source of concern in the community due to graffiti and decay.
City officials, including City Manager Levent Sucuoglu, Commissioner Marlon Bolton, Mayor Michelle Gomez, Vice Mayor Kicia Daniel, and Commissioners Krystal Patterson and Morey Wright, attended the ceremony.

The new center is part of a broader initiative to improve public recreational facilities across the city, as outlined in Tamarac’s East Side Parks Feasibility Study. The site was acquired through grant funding, and the city confirmed that no taxpayer dollars were used for the purchase.
Plans for the Eastside Community Center include a 10,000-square-foot facility, a walking trail, a playground, a pavilion, and a fishing pier—amenities designed to provide residents with expanded opportunities for recreation and community engagement.
