The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in Lauderhill on July 28.
The accident reportedly occurred at approximately 1:28 a.m. near the 5500 block of North University Drive.
At the time of the incident, Lauderhill Police and Lauderhill Fire Rescue responded to the scene amid reports of a traffic crash with severe injuries.
According to the BSO press release, the department’s Traffic Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation due to the loss of life.
According to the initial findings from the ongoing investigation, the driver involved in the incident has been identified as Javern Edward Malik Nolan, 26, of Coral Springs.
The accident report shows Nolan was driving a 2018 Honda Accord heading northbound on North University Drive when the incident occurred as he approached Commercial Boulevard.
The investigation has pinpointed an area where the pedestrian was attempting to cross the street, an area of the road lacking marked crosswalks.
The identity of the victim, described as an adult male, is currently being withheld until next-of-kin notification is completed.
As per the investigators’ report, initial findings show that Nolan attempted to avoid colliding with the pedestrian, but as the pedestrian tried to rush across the street to avoid being struck, he was killed.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced the victim deceased shortly after arriving on the scene.
BSO reports indicate Nolan stayed at the accident scene and cooperated fully with the investigating authorities.
Based on preliminary assessments, neither excessive speed nor impairment seems to have played a role in the tragic crash.
