A man has been charged with premeditated attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a man multiple times during a disturbance outside his business.
On October 5, officers from the Lauderhill Police Department responded to a call regarding a suspicious incident near the 5500 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard.
Upon arrival, officers encountered two individuals with severe injuries, including a man later identified as the suspect, Geupsen Dareus, 59, of Lauderhill.
According to the initial police report, the victim suffered multiple lacerations to his face and neck, while Dareus showed signs of an abrasion on his right elbow.
Due to the severity of their injuries, both parties were transported to separate hospitals for further medical evaluation.
Approximately two hours later, records show an investigator from the Lauderhill Police Department arrived to review video surveillance at the incident location, revealing that a physical altercation broke out between Dareus and the victim outside the business.
Footage showed that Dareus appeared to punch the victim in the face with a closed fist before an unidentified bystander briefly separated the two.
Shortly after, the victim walked back toward the business and appeared to throw an object at its exterior before leaving the premises.
The situation escalated further when the victim returned to the business and appeared to speak on a cellphone outside. At that moment, Dareus exited the building armed with a long, pointed object and rushed towards the victim, striking him multiple times in the head and face.
Another unknown bystander eventually separated the pair.
Later that evening, an investigator met with the victim at Broward Health Medical Center. He claimed that the conflict began when Dareus demanded he leave the business earlier, which he complied with. However, he did not explain the initial physical altercation or the thrown object observed on the surveillance footage.
The arrest report shows that Dareus offered his account of the events during a subsequent interview. He stated that over the past few days, he had been dealing with disturbances caused by the victim and did not want him at the business due to his disruptive behavior.
Dareus admitted to confronting the victim, which led to a physical altercation. He claimed that the victim then returned and threw a bottle at the business, prompting him to lock the doors.
When the victim came back again, Dareus said he felt he needed to defend both his business and his patrons.
When questioned about the object he used during the altercation, Dareus denied utilizing any item despite the video surveillance footage showing him wielding a long, pointed object. Additionally, records show Dareus did not contact law enforcement at any point during or after the incident.
Based on the evidence collected and Dareus’s admission, investigators determined that Dareus should be charged with attempted murder.
The report indicates the investigation remains ongoing as authorities gather additional evidence and testimonies about the incident.
