Chabad Jewish Center of Tamarac will host a memorial event commemorating the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks and featuring remarks by a veteran of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
Attendees at the Oct. 6 event will honor victims slain in the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks and hear a first-hand account of the ongoing Gaza war from Israel Defense Forces Sergeant Major Yossi Ajzensmidt, who recently fought in the Palestinian enclave.
Rabbi Kopel Silberberg of Chabad Jewish Center of Tamarac said Ajzensmidt would also show photographs and videos he took during the Gaza operation.
The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the center at 8100 N. University Dr. There is no cost to attend and sponsorship and donation opportunities are available, organizers said.
Attendees can register for the event here.
“As we near a year since the most horrific attack on Jewish people since the Holocaust, it’s a time to come together as a community, to strengthen ourselves and both grieve and be a light going forward,” said Silberberg. “We’re going to hear from this hero and be there for each other. We’re here to bear witness.”
Born in Melbourne, Australia, Ajzensmidt moved to Israel as a teenager and joined the IDF. In 2005, he enlisted in a paratrooper brigade and, according to organizers of the Chabad Tamarac event, subsequently participated in the Second Lebanon War in 2006.
After completing three years of active IDF duty in 2009, Ajzensmidt shifted to IDF reserve duty. In 2020, believing his military duties were complete, he moved to Miami with his wife and three children.
After the Oct. 7 attacks, Ajzensmidt returned to Israel and rejoined his paratrooper unit. His tour of duty lasted four months, with the latter two months spent in Khan Yunis, Gaza, where he saw combat, organizers said.
