Wendy Julien, an exercise coach, aims to unite the local running community.
Julien is the owner of PinkBerry Boost and is a fitness and recreation coach for Tamarac. She approached Mayor Michelle J. Gomez with the idea of having a 5K run and walk in the city. Gomez was excited about the idea, and they worked together to create the “Running on Tamarac” at Tephford Park on the morning of August 9.
A group of runners and walkers got together at Tephford for the inaugural event. Julien led the before-and-after stretching activity, and the runners and walkers completed two laps on a path at the park, covering 3.1 miles. The participants then had the opportunity to socialize with one another.
“I promote fitness, and I wanted to have an event to bring the running and walking community together. I want people who enjoy fitness activities in Tamarac to come together and build relationships,” said Julien.
She was joined by Ashley Toussaint, the founder of Running Edge 305, a fitness group in Miami. They worked together to organize the event. “This was a nice event and we had a diverse group that enjoyed a run,” he said.
Julien said she is working on starting a similar group in Tamarac that would be called Running Edge 954.
Gomez participated in the run/walk and was pleased to see a community fitness activity. “I loved this event and seeing people having fun together. I want to hold more runs like this,” she said.
Many of the participants are active in a group known as Run Club Elite, which meets on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at the Tamarac Sports Complex, located at 7525 NW 88th Avenue. People of all running abilities are welcome, and participation is free. Most run about 1.4 miles, but some individuals choose longer distances.

Runners and walker get ready to participate in the first ever Running on Tamarac event on August 9.
