The city commission approved a purchase of a new fire truck for Fire Station 36.
Fire Chief Mike Annese told the commissioners the long-awaited purchase is part of the 2023 Fire Department vehicle replacement program.
Besides buying a new 75-foot Aerial Ladder Truck and a Heavy Duty Rescue Pumper, the fire rescue would also refurbish two ambulances and remount them on new chassis, which Annese said is a cost-effective way to maintain the fleet of Fire-Rescue vehicles.
This equipment is partially funded through the 2023 city budget, and the remainder will be included in the 2024 Budget.
Fire Station 36 on 7200 N. University Drive currently only has a rescue truck, which has been a concern for the residents living in the area, with some voicing their fears about longer response times to fires during the public comments at the city commission meetings.
Annese said fire trucks from Stations 41, 15, and 78 respond to fires in areas served by the station. Then secondary responses come from North Lauderdale, Lauderhill, and Sunrise, if available.
“After Covid and manufacturing delays and rising costs, we are finally ready to purchase and update the necessary fire equipment,” Annese said, adding that the manufacture and delivery of fire truck will take two years so that the city will get it in 2025.
