The new Walmart Neighborhood Market opened its doors Wednesday morning on what was the former site of a Baby Love store, and Tamarac residents were welcomed to a ribbon-cutting ceremony that drew both City and Walmart officials along with the JP Taravella Band.
“This Walmart represents the future of Tamarac,” said Mayor Harry Dressler in a speech he gave before the crowd of people waiting to be one of the first ones to shop at the store. Those that did attend were some of the lucky ones that received free samples that were being given away by vendors attending the store opening.
Peter Mason, Executive Director of the Tamarac Chamber of Commerce said that he was pleased with the new store. “The fact that they employ over 92 local people is one of the best things.” He said it would inspire other businesses to come to the recently improved shopping center as well.
The new store is located at the corner of W. McNab Road and N. Pine Island Road at 6931 NW. 88th Ave. and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The store provides groceries including fresh produce, meats, and frozen foods, and also includes a drive-through pharmacy.
Rabbi Yankie Denburg with the Chabad Center of Jewish Life in Southwest Coral Springs who gave the invocation at the event was also pleased with the wide selection of Glatt Kosher meat and dairy items they offered for observant Jews.
Residents will be pleased that Store manager Jennifer Haines who began her Walmart career in 2001 as an overnight grocery stocker, is also a Tamarac resident herself and lives Colony West area.
“We’re so excited to be a part of the community and to offer low prices, great products and bring big smiles,” said Haines. “We’re here and happy to help.”
Haines said that besides the store employing over 90 people, she said that 20 of them are Tamarac residents and 15 are veterans – and will say this on their name badges. The store also offers gluten-free and organic foods, and associates will offer assistance if anyone needs it.
The grand-opening celebration also included presentations of grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to local community groups.
Future Event
If you missed the grand opening, it’s not too late because on Saturday, February 14, Walmart wants to celebrate with residents with a Big Family Welcome to give customers a chance to meet Haines and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
