Akila Shakir Young {BSO}
A heated dispute over bathroom use escalated into a violent altercation, leaving one person severely injured and another facing aggravated battery charges.
According to Lauderhill Police Department records, on December 14, officers responded to a home near the 600 block of Northwest 33rd Avenue in response to a victim’s 911 call.
According to the victim, she and her roommate, later identified as Akila Shakir Young, 19, of Tamarac, had argued over allotted bathroom time. Eventually, the argument turned physical and led to the need for a police response.
The victim told officers that she allowed Young to use the bathroom to de-escalate the situation, but the argument continued as the victim walked toward her bedroom. Young allegedly threatened her, saying she would “kick the victim’s ass if she got kicked out of the house.”
Records show the victim, attempting to avoid a physical altercation, exited the residence, but Young followed her outside.
The confrontation turned physical, with witnesses reporting that Young and the victim began fighting under the carport. During the altercation, Young reportedly retrieved a baseball-sized black rock and threw it at the victim, striking her in the face and causing a deep laceration approximately two to three inches long.
Witnesses also reported to police that Young threw the rock at the victim multiple times thereafter.
The victim sustained significant injuries, including a severe laceration to her forehead, which required medical attention. Lauderhill Rescue transported her to Broward General Hospital for treatment.
Records show Young admitted to officers that she started the physical altercation but claimed she threw the rock in self-defense. Based on statements from the victim and witnesses, as well as the visible injuries, law enforcement determined there was sufficient evidence to arrest Young.
Young was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
