A Lauderhill woman is facing felony charges after police say she attempted to rob a local supermarket with a baseball bat over a cigarillo, or short, narrow cigar.
According to a Lauderhill Police Department arrest report, Ebony Janise Nordelus, 41, was arrested on February 18 following an incident that occurred at Mangos Supermarket, located at 5588 West Oakland Park Boulevard, in the Inverness Plaza shopping center.
An officer conducting a routine foot patrol reported hearing screaming and commotion coming from inside the store. As he ran toward the entrance, he found Nordelus coming out of the store holding a blue and red baseball bat in her right hand.
Police say Nordelus initially entered the store and requested a Black & Mild cigarillo, but left after she could not find her money. She later returned while another customer was purchasing lottery tickets, allegedly grabbed the tickets, and ran out of the store.
According to the affidavit, Nordelus then returned to the store, armed with the baseball bat, and demanded a cigarillo from an employee. Investigators say she lifted the bat above her head and made threatening swinging motions toward the employee. She also allegedly threw a cigarette lighter at him.
Officers reviewed surveillance video that allegedly confirmed Nordelus attempting to rob the store with the bat and causing a large amount of chaos and fear among customers around her.
Following her arrest, Nordelus admitted the bat belonged to her and acknowledged that she initially asked for the cigarillo before threatening the employee. She reportedly told officers she was sorry.
Nordelus was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
