Daniel David Barrett {BSO}
A man was arrested after allegedly stabbing another man outside a Tamarac 7-Eleven and trying to flee on a county bus, according to BSO.
According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, Daniel David Barrett, 32, of Lauderdale Lakes, was arrested Sunday evening on a charge of attempted first-degree murder.
Investigators say the incident began on Sunday afternoon at the 7-Eleven at 4999 North State Road 7. Surveillance video from inside the store showed Barrett in a verbal argument with the victim. Barrett then walked outside and waited near the entrance for the man to leave.
Once the victim exited the store, a physical altercation broke out just outside the camera’s view. While the stabbing itself wasn’t captured on the store’s surveillance system, a bystander recorded the confrontation and later turned the footage over to investigators. That video reportedly shows Barrett holding what appears to be a knife.
Records show the same witness told deputies they saw Barrett flee the scene heading toward the Plaza Hotel, less than a mile north on State Road 7, before doubling back south and then heading east on West Commercial Boulevard, where he attempted to board a Broward County Transit bus. The witness called 911, and deputies detained Barrett shortly thereafter.
When he was taken into custody, Barrett was carrying a keycard for Room 120 at the Plaza Hotel. Surveillance footage from the hotel showed him arriving in the parking lot “in a frantic manner” within minutes of the stabbing. Records show the keycard was used to unlock the room, presumably to collect his belongings before he planned to flee via the county bus.
The report indicates the victim was treated at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale for two lacerations and a puncture wound to his lower left abdomen that required multiple sutures.
Upon interview, Barrett admitted an altercation took place, but told detectives he believed he acted in self-defense because he had been attacked.
Barrett was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he is held without bond.
