A man wanted in connection with a knife attack that left a victim requiring surgery was captured at a Tamarac Burger King.

According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, Joseph Lamar Moody, 35, was taken into custody at the Burger King located at 7299 West Commercial Boulevard following allegations that he slashed a man’s left hand with an eight-inch chef’s knife during an argument in a parking lot outside First United Methodist Church

Records show the two men, who lived at the Broward County Central Homeless Assistance Center, had spent July 11 together and planned to go to a casino, the alleged victim told detectives. They instead made several detours before heading back toward Fort Lauderdale, according to the affidavit.

The men argued about money after getting off a bus near the church. The alleged victim told police they went into a Publix across the street, then continued arguing in the church parking lot. Moody told him to wait and returned to the store, the affidavit states.

The man said Moody came running toward him with a knife. He backed away, tripped and fell, then raised his left hand to protect himself as Moody swung the blade.

Afterward, the men took a bus back to the shelter. The alleged victim called 911 the next morning and later required stitches and surgery for deep cuts to his fingers, police said.

When officers went to the shelter, Moody ran to his room and jumped from a second-story window in an attempt to escape, according to the affidavit.

Moody would later tell detectives he had acted in self-defense after the other man became aggressive and tried to grab the knife. Detectives said they initially had no video to resolve the conflicting accounts.

On July 15, investigators obtained silent surveillance footage from the church. According to the affidavit, it shows Moody approaching the man with a knife, lunging at him and swinging the blade while the man was on the ground. Police then sought an arrest warrant on the aggravated battery charge.

Moody was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
