A Tamarac man is in custody after allegedly assaulting his mother with a knife during a terrifying hours-long false-imprisonment incident.
According to Broward County Sheriff’s Office records, on July 19, deputies responded to a residence after receiving reports of a chaotic incident that included a possible stabbing.
Deputies made contact with the victim inside the home, and she informed them of an hours-long incident involving her son, later identified as Richard Marcus, 54, of Tamarac, that occurred between 12 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. that morning.
According to the victim, the altercation began around midnight when Marcus entered her room with a pillow in hand as she was lying in bed watching television. Marcus allegedly approached her and stated, “It looks like you’re trying to smother me,” before placing the pillow over her face in an attempt to suffocate her.
The report shows that the victim managed to knock the pillow away and get out of bed, at which point she informed Marcus that she was calling the police. She said Marcus then allegedly took her phone from the dresser, preventing her from calling 911.
The victim stated that Marcus pushed her to the ground, between the bed frame and dresser, and proceeded to bang her head onto the floor and the dresser multiple times. This assault allegedly continued over four hours.
The woman told officers that she eventually managed to get up and tried to leave the residence, but Marcus closed the door, denying her escape. The victim says she later attempted to leave again but was followed by Marcus, who entered her room holding a knife.
Arrest records indicate Marcus turned his back to the victim and began poking himself in the stomach, making “weird noises.” He then turned to face the victim and pressed the knife into her skin, causing a minor laceration to her lower abdomen.
In fear for her life, the victim reported she attempted to escape; Marcus then forced the victim to grip the handle of the knife and pressed it into his abdomen again, keeping her hands on the knife.
Following the initial assault, deputies arrived on the scene and Baker-Acted Marcus, as the full details of the incident were not immediately apparent. Later in the day, after visiting her doctor and recalling the events more clearly, the victim provided additional information to the deputies.
After a deeper investigation, Marcus was charged with aggravated battery of an elderly person, false imprisonment, and assault with a deadly weapon.
