Dear Neighbors,

It’s everyone’s favorite time of year, and there are plenty of fun activities for you and your loved ones to enjoy this month in Tamarac. Check them out below!

Come kick off the holiday season at the City of Tamarac’s Light the Night Tree Lighting Celebration on Thursday, December 2nd, at Caporella Park (5200 Prospect Rd.). Join us as we light a Chanukah menorah, Christmas tree, and Kwanzaa kinara. Attendees can also get a photo with Santa Claus! The event begins at 6:30 p.m., see you there.

You can get a free mammogram screening in the Pressel Mammo Van on Thursday, December 2nd, at the Tamarac Community Center (8601 W Commercial Blvd.). The service is available for patients 35 years or older and only by appointment. To schedule, call 561-955-5438 or visit www.brrh.com/mammovan. Financial assistance for the uninsured is available by calling Troy Bingham at 561-955-4294.

This month’s Move with Mayor is on Saturday, December 4th, and features a free hour-long yoga session. The class begins at 10:30 a.m., at Caporella Park.

If you’ve ever wished to speak with Santa, then you’re in luck! Beginning December 8th, you can sign up for a virtual call with Santa Claus himself! There are various date and time slots available. Cost is $5 per call. To register, call (954) 597-3674 or visit tamarac.me/events.

Friday, December 10th, the holiday fun continues at the Tinsel Town Holiday Drive-Thru at the Tamarac Sports Complex (9901 NW 77th St.). Stop by for a merry good time filled with music and beautiful holiday decorations in Tamarac’s very own Winter Wonderland. The event is from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and letters to Santa are welcome!

Pet lovers can also partake in the holiday cheer at this year’s Paws With Claus Holiday Paw-ty and Adoption Event on Saturday, December 11. The event is at Gary B. Jones Park for People and Pups (8101 Southgate Blvd.) and runs from 10:00 a.m. to noon. It will feature vendors, holiday music, raffle prizes, and even a Best Dressed Holiday Pet Contest. My puppies and I just love this event and cherish gathering with other fur baby families!

Kids will not want to miss out on this year’s Grinch Party on Friday, December 17. The night will include a screening of “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” on the big screen at the Tamarac Multipurpose Center (7531 N. University Dr.) from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and have arts, crafts, games, and much more! This is a kids-only event (3rd – 5th grade only). The cost is $10 per child. Space is limited so register early at tamarac.me/events. For more information, call 954-597-3674.

I want to take a moment to congratulate the City’s Information Technology (IT) and Fire Rescue Departments on winning two major awards in 2021.

  • The City of Tamarac was named one of the top-ranked digital cities by the Center for Digital Government. Tamarac placed 3rd in the 2021 Digital Cities Survey in the “up to 75,000” population category. This award acknowledges the innovative work of the City’s IT Department in enhancing the lives of both staff and residents. Congratulations to Levent Sucuoglu, James Twigger, and the entire IT Department for your incredible skill and talent!
  • Tamarac Fire Rescue placed 2nd in the Clin Con Competition promoted by NAVRA, the North American Vehicle Rescue Association. First responder teams from all over the country participated to showcase their lifesaving skills in vehicle extrication and a mix of real-life drills. Congratulations to retired Fire Chief Percy Sayles, Fire Chief Michael Annese, the competition team, and the entire Tamarac Fire Rescue Department for your expertise and magnificent work!
