Kalalou Caribbean Bar and Grill was ordered to shut down on November 13 following a health inspection triggered by a complaint.
According to the inspection report, the restaurant at 7041 West Commercial Boulevard underwent an inspection that uncovered 14 violations, including roach activity.
Inspectors reported roach activity on a wall above a clean equipment rack, inside a paper towel dispenser, at a kitchen hand wash sink, and in various other areas throughout the restaurant.
Inspectors noted multiple additional violations in the report, including improper food storage, which was linked to the discovery of a box of raw meat placed directly on the floor in the walk-in freezer.
The report also noted unapproved food handling practices, such as using a broken ice scoop in the ice machine and a bowl without a handle to serve black rice and peas.
Temperature control issues were also cited. Cooked chicken, pork, and beef were all stored at unsafe temperatures ranging from 45°F to 53°F, exceeding the recommended 41°F for cold storage.
Kalalou Caribbean Bar and Grill remained closed until all violations were addressed and the establishment passed a follow-up inspection.
