Gun violence remains a significant problem facing the nation. Members of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense America are working for government policies for gun safety.
At the June 10 commission meeting, members of the organization received a proclamation for National Gun Violence Awareness Day from Mayor Michelle J. Gomez. The actual day is June 5.
For Mia Ahmed, the lead for Moms Demand Action, the problem is personal. She lives near Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and was there during the shooting. The organization is not seeking to eliminate gun ownership but wants a more careful approach to guns.
“We want the three-day waiting period to remain in effect. People can wait three days to purchase a gun,” said Ahmed. “Parents who own guns should store them in locked containers.”
Moms Demand Action members often wear orange shirts to honor victims of gun violence and to raise awareness about this problem. Ahmed said the color was chosen because orange is the bright, highly visible color hunters wear in the woods so other hunters will know they are not prey.
The goal of Moms Demand Action is to reduce gun violence and advocate for common-sense public safety laws. As a nonpartisan grassroots movement, the organization lobbies lawmakers and educates communities about responsible gun ownership, according to its website.
