Midwestern favorite Savvy Sliders is opening a location in Tamarac.

The city commission approved the special exception and variances for the 2,149 sq. ft. fast food restaurant and drive-through lane at 2400 West Commercial Blvd. at the Jan. 11 meeting.

Michael Pinnell from Stonefield Engineering, who represents Savvy Sliders, said they primarily operate in the Greater Lakes region in Ohio and Michigan, choosing Tamarac as one of its first restaurants in Florida as they expand into the state.

The company website shows future locations, including Sunrise, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami.

Located at the site of the former Moe’s Southwest Grill at the West Commercial Blvd. and Prospect Road intersection,  Savvy Sliders will share a building with Domino’s and AT&T.

The company plans to renovate the exterior of the building according to its branding standards, add a pick-up window, and offer seating for 20.

Known for hand-breaded fried chicken fingers, gourmet sliders, and hand-spun custard shakes, the restaurant prides itself on never using frozen beef and using “the best” ingredients.

While the company received all the necessary approvals, commission members expressed concerns about the traffic pattern that the new drive-through window might create during the discussion.

“We think your business is going to do very well, which may cause some issues with traffic because there is no dedicated right turn late from Commercial Blvd.,” said Mayor Michelle Gomez.

She then confirmed with city staff that they and company traffic engineers reviewed the traffic pattern. Gomez said the FDOT would have to approve the right turn lane at the intersection and asked Pinnell if the company would take responsibility for the traffic issues, should they arise. He agreed.

Making sure the drive-through lane doesn’t block traffic is in the company’s best interests: “people would not want to come if they cannot get in,” said Gomez.

Tamarac’s Savvy Sliders does not yet have an opening date.
