Scam Alert: BSO Warns Residents About Jury Duty Scam Resurfacing in Broward

The Broward Sheriff’s Office, along with the 17th Judicial Circuit and the Broward Clerk of Courts, is warning residents about the return of a jury duty scam in which callers falsely claim victims missed jury service and must pay a fine to avoid arrest.

BSO emphasized that law enforcement agencies, the courts, and the Clerk of Courts will never call to threaten arrest or demand payment to prevent someone from going to jail.

In a recent case under investigation, scammers contacted a Broward resident and falsely claimed the person had missed federal jury duty and that an arrest warrant had been issued. The caller instructed the victim to deposit $15,000 into a kiosk as bail to avoid arrest and participate in a video conference with someone posing as a member of the Broward County judiciary.

The victim became suspicious, refused to provide money or personal information, ended the call, and contacted law enforcement.

According to BSO, scammers frequently change their tactics and rely on high-pressure tactics to confuse and intimidate victims. They may spoof phone numbers to make calls appear to come from trusted agencies or use the names and titles of real government employees to gain credibility.

BSO also shared these tips to avoid becoming a victim:

Law enforcement agencies will never call to request money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or banking information.
Do not click on suspicious links or unexpected email attachments.
Never send money in response to an unexpected phone call, text message or email.
Do not share personal, financial or banking information with unsolicited callers.
Verify requests by contacting the organization directly using an official phone number or website.
If something feels suspicious, hang up and report the incident to local authorities.

Authorities urge residents to trust their instincts. Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up immediately and contact law enforcement. Residents living in BSO jurisdictions can report incidents by calling the agency’s non-emergency line at 954-764-4357.
