Chabad Jewish Center of Tamarac will begin writing its first community Torah scroll on Sunday, marking a historic milestone for the congregation.
The Torah Writing Inauguration event will be held August 9, at 10 a.m. and will mark the start of a project meant to unite the local Jewish community for generations to come, said Rabbi Kopel Silberberg of Chabad Jewish Center of Tamarac.
A professional sofer, or Torah scribe, will write the first letters of the new Torah scroll, and attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the ancient mitzvah by assisting in the writing of a letter under the scribe’s guidance.
The Torah, Judaism’s central text, is the compilation of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
The Torah is being dedicated by Aimie and Michael Rosner, whose gift made the community project possible, Silberberg said.
“A Torah is much more than a scroll,” Silberberg said. “It is the heart of Jewish life. This Torah will celebrate our children as they learn about their heritage, be danced with on Simchas Torah, and inspire our community for decades to come. It’s an incredible privilege to be there from the very beginning.”
After the opening ceremony, the Torah will continue to be written over the coming months, according to the rabbi. People will be able to dedicate letters, words, verses, Torah portions, and other meaningful sections in honor of or in memory of loved ones.
The completed Torah will be celebrated later this year with a community-wide dedication celebration, Silberberg said.
The August 9 inauguration will include a catered brunch, desserts and l’chaim—a celebratory Jewish toast.
The event is open to the community at no charge, though advance RSVP is appreciated, Silberberg said.
The Community Torah Writing Inauguration will be held at Chabad Jewish Center of Tamarac, 8100 N. University Drive in Tamarac.
