With COVID-19 cases spiking all around the state, Tamarac Talk continues providing updates from the Florida Department of Health.

On January 17, there were 103,560 COVID-19 tests conducted in Florida. Of the test administered, 13,008 returned positive. Out of the positive cases, 7,884 were new cases. Both the number of tests administered and positive results are the lowest numbers the state has reported in quite some time.

There were 4,173 positive COVID-19 cases in the City of Tamarac — an increase of 91 positive cases since we last updated readers on January 15. Recently, county officials announced Coral Square Mall would become the sixth vaccination site in Broward County. Residents are welcome to this location by appointment only.

Statewide in Florida, there have been 1,579,281 positive COVID-19 cases to date. Florida is one of only a handful of states in the U.S. to have recorded over 1 million COVID-19 cases, with only California and Texas registering the most cases in the country.

The average age to contract COVID-19 in Broward County on January 17 was 43-years-old, a three-year increase from the mean age of infections Florida has recorded since the pandemic began.

For months, the average age of a person contracting COVID-19 in Florida has hovered at or around 40-years-old. The positivity rate for Floridians on January 17 was 12.56-percent.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 24,274 deaths to date in Florida due to COVID-19 and a total of 68,170 patients hospitalized due to the virus.
