A Tamarac was arrested Thursday and charged with his wife’s murder, which he appeared to try and cover up by staging a burglary, authorities said.
Rolland Powell, 76, was taken into custody by the Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide V.I.P.E.R. (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) Unit on a warrant for the murder of his wife, Janice Herbert, last Friday, March 15, according to BSO.
Powell was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm, authorities said. He was being held at the Broward County Main Jail Friday without bond, records show.
Herbert, 53, who shared an address with Powell at 4500 Northwest 45th Court in The Mainlands, was found in the residence suffering from a gunshot wound after someone reported a shooting there at 11:43 p.m., according to BSO. Herbert was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to BSO Homicide Unit detectives, their investigation revealed that Powell appeared to stage a burglary to cover up the homicide and provided inconsistent statements to detectives regarding the incident.
Additional information about the investigation was not immediately available Friday.
