Tamarac North Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce Meet the Candidates event raised $485 for local schools.
The event at the Woodmont Country Club on October 12 helped the community learn about nine of the ten candidates running for commission and mayoral seats in the upcoming election. Close to 100 residents attended the meeting.
Peter Mason, Chamber’s Executive Director, said the organization received some criticism for charging a $5 entrance fee for the event. “But local children will benefit from the proceeds, so we feel good about it, and it was a great event.”
Mason explained that the chamber created the Tamarac North Lauderdale Foundation to recognize that educational support to local schools is a necessary requirement of economic development.
“The nonprofit is in its first year and has a goal to support students and schools in the area. We hope it will make a difference,” he said, adding that the funds can be used for classroom room projects, school trips, scholarships, and educational programs.
Foundation Chair, Steven Parker, said it is important for the business community to support the schools.
“The foundation donated to the North Lauderdale Teen Club trip to Washington, DC, earlier in the year and will be making more contributions. Proceeds from our online auction in March, Bowling 4 Business in June, and the PuroClean Classic Golf Tournament on December 9 will all make a difference,” he added.
Parker said The Foundation Board is excited about 2023 and future fundraising events and encouraged residents to help the organization support the local schools with donations.
