Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal shooting that left a 16-year-old boy dead Wednesday night in Tamarac, authorities said.
At approximately 10:10 p.m. on Dec. 31, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a shooting at 7913 NW 71st Ave., according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue responded to the scene.
Deputies found a 16-year-old male, identified as Orlando Wedderburn, suffering from a gunshot wound, authorities said. Wedderburn was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
An adult female also suffered a graze wound during the incident and was treated at the scene, officials said.
An adult male was detained on the scene for questioning. Detectives with BSO’s Homicide, Special Victims, and Crime Scene units responded to investigate.
According to investigators, the shooter remained on scene, presented a self-defense claim, and was later released. Detectives said the case will be presented to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office upon completion of the investigation to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
The investigation remains ongoing.
